Neuromorphic Computing Architectures

Welcome to the Neuromorphic Computing Architectures (NCA) chair at the Institute of Computer Engineering (ZITI), Heidelberg University, led by Prof. Dr. Johannes Schemmel.

Our research focuses on the intersection of microelectronics, computer engineering, and neuroscience. We pioneer physical-model neuromorphic systems that emulate the structure and learning mechanisms of the human brain directly in custom mixed-signal silicon hardware — achieving unparalleled speed and energy efficiency for next-generation bio-inspired AI and scientific computing.

Initiatives, collaborations and related activities:

  • The Electronic Visions Group was founded in 1995 at the Kirchhoff Institute for Physics. The research group integrates efforts from across Heidelberg University (including ZITI and KIP). The group is world-renowned for developing the BrainScaleS accelerated neuromorphic platform and leading key contributions to European research infrastructures like EBRAINS and the Human Brain Project.
  • ASIC Lab of the Heidelberg University: As part of our joint engineering capabilities, the ASIC Lab provides specialized infrastructure and expertise in full-custom microelectronics, micro-system design, and integrated circuit fabrication for cutting-edge physical experiments and hardware architectures.
  • We are located at the European Institute for Neuromorphic Computing (EINC), a building dedicated to the exploration of novel paradigms of information processing based on the concept of Physical Computing.
